De encrypted files in windows Xp

H

Harish Sachdeva

I had few encrypted files in Windows XP pro in one partition and after I
reinstalled the OS, I cannot de encrypt those files. I know the user name
and the password with which I used to log in while the files were encryped
and I am using the same user name and pwd after reinstalling the OS. Of
course I have the admin previllages with this user.

Please let me know how to deencrypt the data. Any help shall be appreciated.

Why posted this in a DUTCH NG? NL in the name stands for Netherlands.

The answer to your question is very simple, you have lost your data.
Before you re-installed XP you should have made a backup of your
security-keys.

When you leave your house and don't take the keys with you, how do you
come in? With encryption there is no such thing as a backdoor or
window.

If you
1. had that earlier build in an up-level domain
2. had exported the EFS key from the account and still have it
3. had defined a recovery agent, exported its key and still have that
4. have a complete backup with system state from which you can
recover the old system to bootability, with the encrypting account
having a password you remember (at time of backup)
5. have an intact copy of the encrypting account's (the original one,
not modified by reinstall) profile and are willing to do some
involved hacking about (not cracking about) or are willing to open
a paid support call to Microsoft Support
Then (given any one of the above) you files may be recoverable/
Otherwise the files are gone.
