DDE Server

Hi,

Do I need to have the DDE services enabled? Can I have the services
disabled? I recently started to have problems shutting down (XP SP1) with
the DDE Server not shutting down till I ended the program. Thanks

I am assuming you are talking about the Network DDE Service (NetDDE).

How is it currently configured to start, Automatic or Manual? The default in
XP SP1 is Manual. If it is set to Manual and it is running then something
that needs this service must be starting it. The default setting for this
service on XP SP2 is Disabled.

You might want to test this by setting it to disabled and wait to see which
application starts to scream and holler when it cannot be started.

From what I can determine, the only applications that may use this service
are Clipbook and possibly some
This service is also connected to the Network DDE DSDM service.

If you need to investigate a Service in XP, go to Start/Run and type
services.msc and click OK. Double click the service you wish to look at
and click all of the tabs to view the different sections of information. The
Dependencies Tab will tell you which components depend on a service.

Hi,

Thanks for replying. As far as I know, I have nothing on the computer that
requires the Network DDE service. They are set to manual, but will disable
them and see what screams at me. I am using XP Pro with SP1, it only
happened once during a reboot. Only thing different about this reboot was,
I installed PerfectDisk and was doing a off-boot defrag.

Probably just an anomaly created by that particular set of circumstances. As
long as you adhere to a good maintenance schedule and keep the anti virus
and other security apps up to date I wouldn't lose any sleep over it.
