dcpromo to move tree

B

B

Here's the situation. Previous NT4 PDC server was
successfully upgraded to Windows 2000 AD via an in place
upgrade.

A new forest root say "b.com", was started. Currently
this is the only Mixed mode AD within "b.com".

The need to remove the "b.com" tree and join to
another ...."b.a.com". How can I accomplish this without
losing the NT4 BDCs since if I dcpromo I'll lose my
Global Catalog? I do not want to lose the BDCs in the
process espically the user accounts.

Can this be fixed?

Have a look at this:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=KB;EN-US;q292541

The steps in that article will get you back to a Windows NT 4.0 domain. You
can then upgrade the domain again, making it a child in the existing forest.
Be aware, however, that you will lose any "Active Directory only data" if
you do this. You will not lose your users, groups, computer accounts, etc
(i.e. anything that is stored on the BDCs. You will lose things like Group
Policy Objects, the OU hierarchy, etc.. Basically it's like upgrading the
domain from NT 4.0 again.
