dcpromo logon failure

Hi,

When I run dcpromo to join a secondary domain controller,
I get the following error: The operation failed because:
Managing the network session with \\FQDN failed "Logon
Failure: unknown user name or bad password."

I'm loggining in as the administrator and the admin
password has not spaces in it and we are using service
pack 4. Any ideas Thanks

Is your DNS on the server you are promoting pointing to your internal AD DNS
server. make sure, that in Account dialog you have right domain specified.

Yes to the question: Is your DNS on the server you are
promoting pointing to your internal AD DNS

Yes to: Account dialog you have right domain specified.

I have been playing around a bit with nslookup. I'm
trying to create a reverse lookup zone....

Do you think this is a DNS issue? Any other ideas?
dcpromo doesn't use reverse lookup does it?

thanks

it should only use forwardlookup to locate srv records for your domain DC's,
but I don't know in detail, as I haven't monitored the process using
NetworkMonitor. Check, that your other DC has registered all srv records in
its DNS server under _msdc zone. If you are trying to us nslookup, then try
to resolve srv records not just A records.
I have searched around and found a issue described in
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;303792
Locate dcpromo.log file in %systemroot%\system32\debug to see if you get
more info on this error. What OS version are you using and what is your
current OS on your DC.
