DCPROMO finished with errors

Greetings,
I took a 2000member server in my Win2k mixed mode, AD
domain and ran dcpromo. The task completed with errors.
When I looked at the fqdn on the "new" DC, it was
incorrect: hostname= server2.company.com; domain:
internal.company.com. The fqdn should have been:
server2.internal.company.com. Replication is broken and I
cannot complete a dcpromo to return this server to member
status (and rejoin it with the correct name). When I try
to run dcpromo, the program fails to authenticate with the
domain: internal.company.com.

Has anyone else run across this issue, or something
similar? Is there a Q article out there that addresses
this issue?

You're in luck. There's a nice KB on this. This condition is called a
disjoint namespace, and can be resolved with this article:
