Dc1.ashx

I recently tried to defrag. While it was analyzing, it came up with the
message "Scan aborted. Fatal Error. File whatever, whatever,
IE\content\whatever\Dc1.ashx.
I then went through windows explorer and deleted it into the recycle bin.
When I tried to defrag again, it aborted due to Dc2.ashx. I did the same
thing. A 3rd defrag aborted because these files were in the recycle bin. I
clicked to empty the recycle bin and they disappeared. A 4th dfrag aborted
because these files were in the recycle bin. Sure enough the recycle bin
icon showed full. Opening it shows no files. It won't empty because there
are no files in it. Yet I can't defrag. A friend said that I should be
doing a disc scan first. So just to please him I tried. But that failed
because I didn't have exclusive access. I beleive it is because of these 2
files in the recyle bin. I borrowed and loaded someones NAV. It always
finds worms and viruses because my kids like MSN and I can't teach them
anything and they say (rightly so) that it is the family computer, and I've
made them pay for the internet because they chat so much. I am not too good
at dos scripting but I tried rebooting and f8 to get into win2k safemode
with command open, did attrib -h to unhide the recycle bin but I haven't
been able to find it. Defrag only shows the
File;\\?\Volume{6896edc5-07d1-11d7-a9c7-806d6172696f}\Recyled\Dc1.ashx. I
don't know where that is. I thought maybe I would just format my c: with
fat32 and disconnecting all handles, but it won't allow me to do so because
(if I remember correctly) the current format is RAW because I have a dual
boot with Mandrake as the primary partition. I don't have a burner and my
son has taken the cd with him and my other son has overwritten the boot disk
after I told him I was going to format and he should backup some files.
ARGGHH!
A search on google shows nothing on these files. Nav doesn't find them. My
kids have been installing and deleting like there's no tomorrow, and now are
complaining that things aren't working properly. DUH!
Any suggestions?

Sell your kids.

I spent 3 weeks with the same files appearing on my machine and
eventually had to give up and re-install.
I did ask for help at the time on here but with no success.
If no-one else has any ideas, I am afraid that it is format and
re-install time.

LOL - First, replace the kids!!!!!

Second, try running scandisk in safe mode, command line only.

Then run an AV scan - see http://www.claymania.com/nav-map.html for
info and links.

Then check for spyware using spybot search & destroy from
http://security.kolla.de/index.php?lang=en&page=download
and adaware from
http://www.lavasoft.de/support/download/

For the av and spyware scanners, be sure to download the latest
definitions, after you install, but before you scan.

Leave the defrag till you figure out/remove whatever is causing
the files to be in use.

Let us know how it goes.

First, let me say I've never used Win2k. Nevertheless, I correlate a
folder named 'content' to IE Temporary Internet Files [TIF]. These
are off-line stored pages created by IE when surfing the net.

I correlate Dc# files to Recycle Bin.

I correlate the term Volume as connected with the Restore function
with does not exist in Win98 systems.

I've noticed threads say, advise that you delete restore points
prior to performing any clean up operations. Otherwise, the Restore
program will re-install the malware you just removed.

Hopefully, this will give you some clues as to how to get started.

I suggest to do some reading on this site before you start heading
off in all directions. Note information on HiJackThis for assistance
on cleaning up your mess.

Now the bad news. Without control over other users of the computer,
you are probably wasting your time trying to fix it. They will have
it screwed up again in nothing flat. :-(
