unknown virus

Got a virus, not spyware or whatever, a virus. Comes up as name unknown
when I do a virus check, and cannot disinfect, so deletes it. No probs.
About 10 minutes later I get a warning that it's come back, and I
have to do it again. When I delete it, a file appears in my recycle
bin. From memory, when I don't empty recycle bin it doesn't come
back - when I empty it, the virus appears again. Location is D drive
(second hard drive) Any ideas?

Which AV are you using?

We are talking about a virus here, right?? You don't need to be any "technical" to
understand what AV is.

Time to get a better one, don't you think? Try Avast, it's free. And check your system
with A-Squared while you are at it - the free version is quite good.

More like chamomile! Having a virus is nerve-racking. ;)

I think it's time for you to bite the bullet and realise it's going to
cost you time and money to clean your system and keep it safe. As follows.

a) Make sure the anti-virus utility that came with your machine and/or
internet service is up to date. Pay the yearly subscription fee for
updates! It's cheap insurance.

b) Get at least one other AV (anti-virus) utility.

c) Set your primary AV utility to scan at least once a day, say at
4:25am. If you turn off your computer overnight, turn it on first thing
in the morning - the scan will run while you have your breakfast.

d) Run the secondary AV utility at least once a week.

e) Update both utilities as often as possible. If you got "free for
personal use" versions, you will probably have to do this manually. If
you paid, you can set the programs to update automatically.

f) Face the fact that computers are not yet "buy and use" appliances.
They take a fair amount of technical knowledge to use and maintain
properly and safely. Either learn, or pay a tech for regular
maintenance. You take your in for regular maintenance, right? Do the
same for your computer.

g) Develop a healthy paranoia about computer security. :)
