DC Naming convention

C

Chris Hall

Good morning,

Would it be likely that a server name like SERVER_NAME would cause problems
with AD, because of the non-RFC compliant naming convention (due to the
underscore)?

If so, is it possible to just rename the server? This server holds the FSMO
roles and I can't get them transferred to the other server in our 2 server
network. Any DNS clean up afterwards?

I'm having several errors in the system and directory replication logs and
have not been able to resolve them (see post: 1/15/04 AD Design Help).

I would certainly appreciate any help offered!

I doesn't recommend you to have underscore in the servername, use a -
instead of underscore, how ever it´s not possible to rename a DC in
Windows2000, you can do so in Windows Server 2003

You will have to demote the machine to rename it, and would need to seize
the fsmo roles to the other dc (since you indicated that you can't transfer
them). Normally when a dc that holds fsmo roles demotes it will
automatically transfer them, and as long as dns is working well, it works
very well. You can try a "regular" demotion, but it may not work if unable
to transfer roles, in which case you'd need to do a forced demotion (which
will put the box as server in workgroup), run ntdsutil to clean up metadata,
then repromote after changing the name. The fsmo roles could then be
transfered back if so desired.
