Database does not open

Good day,
I have an Access 2000 database located on a network
server, which is split into front and back ends (both are
located in the same directory). Out of the blue, the front-
end no longer opens (the back end opens though). When
trying to open up the database, Access 2000 opens, but not
the database itself. In fact the behavior is the same as
when one opens the application itself (blank screen and
the same menus).

There are no security measures in place - no permissions
to worry about etc.

I have tried a few things - Compact & Repair; copy the db
elsewhere; opening it with "Shift" - all to no avail.

Any ideas?

Thank you for your time.

How does the Main Switchboard operate? Through a Macro or
Startup? If you use the Startup, you may want to verify
that a form has been assigned. After Access 2k opens have
you tried clicking Window -> Unhide?

Have you tried F11 to see if the database window will
appear?

Another thought is to create a new db container and see if
you can import all of the objects from the original.

The Switchboard is controlled through Startup and I have
tried the Window--> Unhide, and the Unhide is disabled.
It's weird, the functionality/Menu bars you see when you
open the MS Access 2000 application (vice an actual
database) is the functionality I am experiencing when
opening up this front-end database.

Thanks for your help.

Hello Gary,
Apparently I forgot to mention a few things in my original
email. I did, in fact, try F11 and creating a new db
container and attempting to import all the objects. I
wentthrough all the steps (Get External data/Import....)
and after I navigated and selected the database -
absolutely nothing happened - i.e. I am right back in the
database window of the new db.

Thanks for the suggestions!

Denis,

Are you opening this through a shortcut that may have a bad
path? Can I assume that you have tried opening Access and
then gone the File/Open route to find it and open it the
manual way?

Did the import not show you any objects to import or not
even let you get that far?

What happened when you did the compact and repair and what
method did you use if you were not in the database at the
time?

You may want to check the size of the .mdb and see if it
still looks similar to what it was before.

This happens occassionally with one of our databases when
someone 'unexpectedly' closes the database. This 'locks'
the lockfile. Get everyone out of the database, look in
the directory where the database itself resides, locate
and delete the .ldb file, then try to reopen the database.
You can also have the network admin look on the server
for 'Open Resources' to the database, close them then
proceed.

Good day Gary, to answer your questions:
- I attempted to open it up via a shortcut; via
Access/File/open; and even directly in the network folder;
- The Import did not allow me to even see objects to
import - simply the Access application window from which I
attempted to import from;
- Compact - went from the Access application screen, Tools-
->Database Utilities -->Compact and Repair database and
navigated to my db from there; and
- the size of the db has not changed

Thanks again!
