Database data just disappeared.

I am running an Access 97 database that had about 46,000
customer names. On Friday I had around 46K names and when
I came in Monday morning for some reason there were only
43K names. The last inputted record I found was from
early June of this year. The database is and MDE file.
Any suggestions or advice would be greatly appreciated.

have you checked the modify date of the mdb file in advance, has someone
restored from an earlier backup tape ?
do you run delete/update queries from code ?
