First place please don't post in all CAPS. It's considered rude and
shouting. It doesn't make any difference if the whether the file system is
FAT32 or NTFS. Just copy the files.

No problem Franklin. Please post back if you have any more questions. All
Caps is also hard to read. Some folks will by pass all Caps messages.

You don't need to worry about file system differences. You can copy
files back and forth between FAT32 and NTFS partitions in the same
WinXP installation without problems. Copying back and forth via a
network connection is also completely transparent.

due to my lack of knowledge on the subject...many THANKS for getting me
straightened out....Merry Christmas....Frank

It doesn't matter what the file system is. That's what I said in my first
post. Just copy the files like you would normally. If you have a USB
external drive copy from the old to the USB drive, then hook it up to the
new computer and copy from the USB drive. Another option is installing the
old drive as a slave drive in the new computer and copying the files. Or
copy the files to CD or to floppy.

You're welcome. Yep, lurking in this group is a great way to learn. That's
how many of the good posters in here started.

1) Most importantly, please understand that this is not AOL, so QUIT
SHOUTING. Welcome to the Internet: Please take the time to get acquainted
with the local custom before using the 'net; odds are you're not on some
crufty all-caps only teletype.
http://www.ietf.org/rfc/rfc1855.txt

2) You are not going to be able to safe your Windows installation or your
installed programs. You will need to reinstall these. Make sure all your
software licenses and install media is in order before you begin.

3) Copy any data you want to save to the external hard drive. If you were
smart about this and saved only inside your personal areas (like your
desktop or My Documents), then you only need to copy c:\Documents and
Settings)

4) On the new system, make sure Windows is already installedand patched, and
that any software that came with it that you are not going to use has been
uninstalled.

5) Install any software that's still missing that you have a license and
install media for.

6) Copy the files you know you'll need off the external hard drive, keep it
around for when you go back to get more files later.
