Data files gone?

HELP! I recently installed a 3rd party software into my computer and later
uninstalled it. My desktop suddenly became very clean with lots of files and
folders gone. I then did a system recovery. The folders came back but all the
files inside the folders are gone. Please help. Can I still recover my files?

Perhaps, and the first step is to NOT use your computer. If the files were
deleted, chances of recovering them diminish as you use it. Ideally, the
hard disk is removed and hosted on another computer. An easy way to do
this is with an external USB2 drive case or connector. These are not
expensive.

Install data recovery software on the host machine - the host machine must
have enough space for all of hte files you wish to recover. I've used
R-Studio with good results, they have newer versions and a free demo. The
demo will list recoverable files and recover small ones, but you can save
the list. This is good because scanning to make the list can take some
time (i.e., hours). If it lists the files you want, make the calls to buy
the full program. Open the list, and start recovery. Do NOT recover to
the drive you're trying to recover files from.
