.DAT Files

I have been backing up info in preparation of doing an XP Reinstall.
Unfortunately, I neglected to properly identify one of the backup files I
have collected. It is named USMT2IMG.DAT and says it is a Nero Media Player
file. It does not open in NMP and I do not know what application goes with
this large file. Tried to open it in Notepad and Word to see if I could
glean any hint, no luck. Any suggestions. Thanks.

I had a look on Google and the only two things that
seem to show up for that are either part of the Files
And Settings Transfer Wizard, or it's malware. If it's
a huge file, it looks to be part of the backup. I'd
suggest you go look for yourself; just search on that
filename. Lots of hits, but mostly discussion boards.

That is unlikely a Nero file. Nero probably associated itself to
the .dat extension.

This has something on it, anyway.

Many applications take over the .dat association and it is not
associated by default.
Ignore them and don't try and open it.
The program that needs to open it will do so without any association.
