Damaged Disk

How can I get the files off of a disk when it states it needs to be
formatted? I used this disk yesterday, and the files were there. Now it
states it needs to be formatted, but I know I'll lose the files if I click
yes. Is there a way to fix this?

I suppose it's a floppy disk you have trouble with.
If so try to get the files on another computer, if possible with another
version of Windows.
Apart from the usual things that may be wrong with the floppy drive
Windows XP has shown to have often a problem with floppies.

it's a peculiar problem that I have encountered in the past as well, but
with cd's. Don't remember what I did exactly, but Try opening or exploring
the removable media and drive via disk management in the admin tools....
Also, try to do a chkdsk via the cmd prompt....
