damaged dbx's / repair

R

RJK

Was doing a bit of PC housekeeping, and discovered that my OE's Maintenance
| compact - 'blue progress bar' got stuck just after it got going, with the
message "...this folder is in use by OE or another application" (wouldn't
it have been nice if that OE error message routine had been written to
display the sodding name of the folder instead of leaving me guessing.)

So I deleted most *.dbx's in my message store directory, and they were
rebuilt of course and now all is fine but, there was no indication that
there was a problem anywhere until I did a compact. So I imagine that this
could have carried on getting worse without me knowing anything about it.
Not very good is it !

Anyone know of anything that can keep an eye on the condition of these OE
*.dbx's seeing as XP and OE seems to doing such a shitty poor job of it ! ?

regards, Richard

Move the msxbox out of the way and you'll see which dbx file is in use.
Don't click the box to close it or the message behind it will disappear.

I would bet that it read the Folders.dbx file was in use and when that
happens, the best thing you can do is delete it and only it and then restart
OE and a new one will be rebuilt the message folders will be repopulated in
the file and sub folders will become folders and you can drag and drop those
back. (news groups are lost).

Well that wasn't too bright. You lost messages, hopefully none were
important.

Keep the Inbox low in numbers as well as the Sent Items.
Manually compact occassionally. File | Folders | Compact All.

That will happen if you try to do maintenance while online.
If Send / Receive kicks in while you are running the compact,
you will get the message you listed.
(wouldn't
it have been nice if that OE error message routine had been written to
display the sodding name of the folder instead of leaving me guessing.)

It does, in the status box, while it compacts.
It is also updating Folders.DBX.
So I deleted most *.dbx's in my message store directory,

There was NO need.

There WAS no problem, until you tried to compact folders
which OE needed access to.
So I imagine that this
could have carried on getting worse without me knowing anything about it.

There was nothing wrong. All you had to do was wait until
the Send / Receive was complete, and then compact.
To ensure that the conflict did not happen again,
you have 2 choices.

Increase the polling interval, or do your maintenance offline.
Not very good is it !

Given the lack of public outcry about widespread folder corruption
which would have been raging in these NGs if such a "problem"
did in fact exist, you should in future consider the possibility
that YOU may be the one doing something wrong, as is the case here.

Offline maintenance and regular backups are ALL you need to know.

Well I am least glad to see Kelly with the cross-post. It is the only time I
see her these days. Hey, Kelly it is me -- (e-mail address removed) --- my XP
SP2 computer hacked to the core -- email me about it at
(e-mail address removed) if you want the information since I do not want to
make everyone paranoid about how XP SP2 is not as secure as its cracked up to
be and yes Chris Quirke, MVP is right!!!
