D865PERL (Intel): Driver for "ethernet controller"

A

Anders Tomilsson

I'm working on making some major changes for a friend's box and he's
got a D865PERL mobo. I've backed all of the user-related material off
and installed WinXP/SP1. I'm able to get drivers for everything except
for the "ethernet controller" (as it's listed in the device manager.
He doesn't have the standard Intel "orange, blue, white" CD which
comes with the Intel mobos. I've got several other models sitting
here and the CD contents aren't compatible (I've obviously tried).

I've scoured the Intel site, DejaGoogled, Googled, and I'm running out
of ideas.

Anyone got the driver file or can point me to it?

TIA.

Go back to Intel, enter the mobo number, then on the sidebar
for that mobo, you will find downloads, you can download all
the mobo drivers, you just have to look. LAN =ethernet

Hi Anders,

Actually, all the drivers for this board are available on the Intel website:

http://support.intel.com/design/motherbd/rl/rl_drive.htm

As a general tip, you can always find the drivers for current Intel
motherboards by using this pattern:

http://support.intel.com/design/motherbd/ <two letter board code e.g RL> /
<board code again>_drive.htm

Information about this board, and links to documentation & BIOS files etc:

http://support.intel.com/design/motherbd/rl

The onboard LAN solution on the D865PERL (assuming you have the Gigabit
variant of the board) is equivalent to an Intel Pro/1000 Gigabit adapter -
so you can also use the drivers from here if you prefer:

http://support.intel.com/support/network/sb/cs-006120-prd38.htm

All the above URLs can be located by going to the main Intel
http://support.intel.com site and following the links to the desired
product.

I hope this helps.

Hi Anders
I just built a new PC with that board and the drivers are all on Intel
website.
I have a question for someone though.
Is that D865PERL backwards compatable from the 8X AGP to the 4X,I mean the
board supports 8X and i have a 4X card here i am thinking of useing.
Thanks
Carl

Yes. You can use any 1.5v AGP 4x or 8x card in the board. AGP1x/2x cards are
NOT supported, and in most cases will not fit, due to the AGP slot keying.

Most indeedy doody.

I should have mentioned what I'd pulled down & tried on Intel as part
of my initial post. I'd tried a few of the files you'd mentioned but
should have followed through more carefully - your directions (and my
creating a checklist of everything via the D/L or unpack process)
solved the problem.

In the case of the "Ethernet Controller", the correct program/driver
(for the sake of posterity) was pro2kxp.exe, specify an unpack
directory, then run setup.exe. That took care of the actual
installation directly; i.e., it wasn't required you go to the Device
Manager/Hardware, pick a piece of hardware, navigate to the device,
"update driver", etc. etc. etc. was not necessary. setup.exe did it
all.

Thanks again!

Something else I noticed: you mentioned the Pro/1000 adapter.

In looking at the box - the back, where everything is laid out, it
says, "Integerated Intel PRO/1000 or Intel PRO/100 CT Desktop
Connection". When tinkering with installing drivers (and knowing
which one ultimately is the correct one as a fallback), it seems
hellbent on defining itself as "Intel(r) PRO/100 VE Network
Connection". I'm going to go ahead and D/L the docs, but I'm curious
(in advance) as to whether the "or" means it's like a cereal box
surprise and you'll find the "or" after you perform the install (and
see what you magically get).

Hi Anders,

Well, sort of!
The D865PERL board is sold in two variants. There's one with Pro/100VE LAN
down on the board, and another with Pro/1000 LAN. Needless to say, the
Pro/1000 one costs a couple of [insert local currency of preference here]
more.

As luck has it, I have a D865PERL board in front of me right now. It's the
Gigabit LAN variant, which I can tell by:

-the model code printed on a small white sticker, adjacent to the DIMM
slots: C26719-203 (the -203 part is the revision; the C26719 part denotes
it's the Gigabit variant), and also
-the combination LAN/USB jack on the rear I/O panel has "1000BT" etched on
it. The 10/100 variant of the board has "10/100" or somesuch written there.

Even easier, of course, is to look at the box if you have it - my board has
a black/red/blue sticker on the front saying "Intel(R) Pro 10/100/1000 LAN",
and the product code printed on the barcode sticker on the end of the box is
"BOXD865PERLK". BOX denotes it's a boxed product (rather than being sold as
a bare board in bulk for larger system builders), and the K on the end
indicates Gigabit LAN. The 10/100 version has product code "BOXD865PERLL", I
think.
My board has onboard 1394a - I also suspect that the 10/100 version of the
board lacks this, although I've never seen one so can't be sure.
The good news is that if you download the LAN drivers from the Intel
website, it tends to be the same download package for both 10/100 and 1000
LAN solutions - the actual binary files that are used are different in each
case, but the download package is the same for convenience.

Hope this helps..

No a 4X will not work. It specifies this with the paperwork
that you received with the MB. The 865PE has a .8 v slot
and the 4X cards are 1.5v.

Well, that's odd.. I have a D865PERL on the bench in front of me, running
with an ELSA brand TNT2 card from about 1999. Clever of ELSA to make an
AGP8x card 4 years ago, huh?

Actually, the board does support 1.5v AGP 4x cards - as documented at:
http://support.intel.com/design/motherbd/rl/rl_inst.htm#13.0 ("What add-in
AGP cards can be used?")

...and on page 28 of the PDF documentation at:
ftp://download.intel.com/design/motherbd/rl/C3176401.pdf

My bad I misread the OP.
You are correct.

My post probably came across as somewhat sarcastic - my fault for posting
whilst tired, sorry :)
