D:\ is not accessable - Incorrect Function

C

Cosmo Edorado

I'm running a Dell w/ XP professional for a few years now.
2 internal HD C:\ 30GB D:\ 100GB

D: is one huge partition used for storing music, picture and video
files

Everything has been fine for quite a while.

I shut the box down for a week while I was on vaca. I came back,
fired up the box and downloaded some digicam pics to my D: drive,
everything was cool.

All of the sudden the box started geting real sluggish, the Explorer
window would hang, I can hear a disk seeking intermittantly. I
re-booted several times.

If I try and access D: I get popup:
" D:\ is not accessable Incorrect Function"

The Comp management tool shows D: as "online" and "healthy" although
it says the free space is 93.x GB, which is the entire disc, 50%
should be used.

The Disc defrag utility does not even shoe a D: disk.

All the searching I could find re: "Incorrect Function" is related to
external media "CD ROM, Zip, floppy..."

Anyone know what this is related to for hard drives, and what a remedy
would be ?

Obviously, preserving the data is the most important thing, I can
re-rip CD's but I'm not sure what pictures I'd lose from my last
backup.

Sussestions greatly appreciated

Download & run the disk diagnostic tool that your disk
manufacturer makes available on his web site.

The best way to preserve your data is to back up your
important files at least once every week to an independent
medium.
