Hi I have a hp DV6000 laptop. It is showing that the D: drive has only 10%
free space left. I have tried to transfer files to the C: drive to free it
up with NO luck. Please help. I need to know how to delete files on D:
drive and free up some space.

Does D: drive contain a recovery image?
If it does then I would leave D: alone.

Do NOT touch D: partition.

D: is a Recovery partition in case of Operating System or Hard Drive failure.
You are supposed to make Recovery DVDs from it.
Info on how to, should be found in a Manual that came with your computer, or
at HP's website.

If you have saved anything to D:, delete what you have saved(nothing else),
very carefully

OK are you all clairvoyant or just the 3 monkeys???

How do you know her D: is a recovery partition???

My laptop is set up with C: = programs D: = Documents. The recovery
partition does not show in My computer as a drive, its hidden. It is
visable in disk management but she couldnt have written/saved to it and it
wouldnt have reported that it was low on space.

You can also increase the size of the partition. See
http://mindprod.com/bgloss/bootit.html

I suggest a tool like Ace Utilities to show you which files are the
pigs. See http://mindprod.com/jgloss/registrycleaner.html#ACE
There is no point is getting rid of tiny files.

To get rid of a files you just view them with My Computer, right click
and delete. But you had better know what they are before you nuke
them.

Again a program like ACE will find what it considers junk files and
get rid of them. I use batik to write custom disk cleaners that get
rid of junk files.

To clarify what is on C: Should be programs and system files. How much
free space have you got.

And D: what sort of stuff have got on this?

Before you do anything have you got your docs and anything you cant replace
like favourites, passwords, email saved to somewhere else. Could be another
hard drive, CD, DVD or usb drive??

I'll bet your laptop is neither an HP or Compaq. I have worked on hundreds
of HP and Compaq computers, and they all have a D:/Recovery partition. You
are to create restore disks from that partition using the Recovery Manager.
The Recovery Manager uses software programs to fix your computer problem or
recover your computer to its original factory-shipped condition. Few do this
but if your hard drive fails, you either have the disks or you can order
them and wait for a few weeks for them to arrive. No restore disks are
shipped with the product.

Actually it's a pretty safe assumption given that:

1. She says she has an HP DV6000
2. This is a Vista group, so she is probably asking about a Vista laptop

HP laptops with Vista (like my DV9000) are set up with D: as the recovery
partition, and it is visible. I'm not sure having it visible is "a good
thing", but it is visible nonetheless.

Now I'm curious how you know pooh231117 is a her. (I can only assume that
more information is given in the "Discussions" interface than in the Usenet
interface (Windows Mail)).

Yes, I am clairvoyant.
My Crystal Ball says that you are a fool!

Guess what?
It's right!

But without imput from the poster you dont know if it is still in factory
condition. It could have been altered since and until the poster (he or
she) confirms one way or the other it isnt a safe assumption.

No its your best "guess". Until the poster confirms, or until you
physically have the laptop in your hands it will remain a guess.

Tell you what. You put $100 on the table and I'll put $100,000. Winner takes
all.

If the OP knew enough to have altered the partitions on the drive, OP
wouldn't have asked such newbie questions.

No, there's no way to know 100% for sure that we're right. Heck, there's no
way to know for sure that you aren't a TOTAL, 100% PITA. The real chances,
however, are about 99.9999% sure that we're right and you're just being a
jackass.

"Newbie" didnt used to be a swear word. A few years ago on ms communities
someone with greater knowledge would have gently guided the poster through
what was needed. Just telling the poster not to do it isnt enough.

No, there's no way to know 100% for sure that we're right.

Common sense at last.

Ok, I know I'm not a Jackass. I've always been female.

But what does PITA mean??? Do explain then I can give you an answer one way
or another.

;o)

There was no intention on my part to use the word "newbie" in any derogatory
manner. I was describing simple facts.

This discussion, however, is over. I just get tired of dealing with total
idiots sometimes. And I'm talking about YOU, nobody else.
