Cutting and Pasting Text with Different Styles

I need to cut and paste text from one Word doc into a new Word doc.
The text in the original doc has lots of different styles applied to it, my
question is: Should I clear all formatting before cutting and pasting it
across? Or should I just cut and paste the text as it is and apply the new
(master) style to it in the new document?

They are both quite large documents (over 1000 pages) so I am keen to
identify the most time effective and simple method.

If the different styles in the source text are of no use at all then what I
would to is to define the entire document (control-A) and select the "Clear
formatting" option before cutting and pasting.

As always, work with a copy of the source. Just in case.
