Cut out more than half mpg file- Saving makes it bigger than it was

Val

I was using Windows Movie Maker to cut out parts of long movies to
make the files smaller. It worked great for .wmv files but when I cut
out more than half of a .mpg file and saved it, Windows Movie Maker
made the file about twice as big. This, of course, is just the
opposite of what I was trying to do. I thought it might be because MS
has to force everyone to use only their formats for everything and
therefore the .wmv format is not as compressed as .mpg. But I got a
conversion program and it did not help.

Ideally I would like to be able to cut out things from any format
movie file or add things to them or join parts together or any
combination of those things. Can anyone help me with any of this????

Thanks!

If you want to work with mixed formats at the same time, you need to spend
some serious money on professional software to do it. Most will only work
with avi files, some with other file types, but only with the same ones in
the timeline.
