Cut and Paste Problems

B

Brian B

I am using Windows XP Professional on my Laptop. I am the only one on it so I
am Admin for it also.

I have found that when I cut and paste a file

1) File is showing the same size however there is nothing there or the file
is empty.
2) Almost always it comes back it says I do not have Admin rights to the
file and I end up deleting it.

Please let me know what is going on.

Thanks
Brian

User account permissions are different from NTFS permissions.

User account permissions determine what activities a user is allowed to
do on the machine. For example: User accounts with Administrator
permissions can install software, while user accounts with Limited
permissions cannot.

NTFS permissions determine what kind of file and folder access a user
has. For example: whether or not you can write to a folder, open a file,
execute a file, etc.

NTFS permissions trump user account permissions every time. For example:
As an Administrator, you can install software, but if you're not allowed
to open the installer file, it ain't going to happen.

It may be that you do not possess the necessary NTFS permissions on the
file you want to move.

OK.... So what should I do?

Check your NTFS permissions on "a file".

In XP Pro, NTFS permissions are on the Security tab of the file's
properties. To see the Security tab in XP Home, you have to boot to Safe
Mode.

Is there anyway for me to set the permissions across the board so I do not
have to check them everytime I cut and paste a file?

Also how do I boot in to Safe Mode?

Thanks

My candid opinion: If you do not know how to boot into Safe Mode, you do
not want to adjust NTFS permissions. The former is a basic operation,
while the latter is quite advanced. Make a mistake with your NTFS
permissions and you'll lock yourself out of your own computer.

It might be helpful if you want to reveal what this mystery file is,
otherwise, I suggest showing your computer to a professional.

The file is simply some papers for a class I am taking. I get them in a Zip
file and when I extract them there are Word, PDF and PowerPoint files
within. Then when I cut and paste the folder from the desktop to My Documents
....they are gone.

Please remember I am using Windows XP Pro

One other thing... I was just looking at the folder on my desktop and going
to properties I see security...and I do not see anything weird. Is there
something I should be looking for?

Has this ever worked before using your same procedure and then
suddenly you have this problem?

Do you have another person that can try this on a different laptop?

I am having a little trouble following your procedure when you talk
about files and folders. Maybe you could go through the steps with a
little more detail and somebody can try it.

Thanks Johnny ... Here is more detail

BTW I tried the same thing on another computer ...Not a laptop .. and it
worked perfectly

1) Files are downloaded as ZIP files from the school
2) I download them to my desktop
3) When I extract the files they are delivered on my desktop in a folder.
The folder contains, PDF, Word and Powerpoint files
4) If I CUT the folder from my desktop, and then go to Paste it in "My
Documents" the Folder will appear in the "My Documents" but its empty and the
files are gone.

Last night I looked at the security tab and saw nothing strange. I did go
ahead and made sure I had Full Rights through the security tab, as there was
no check marks by my name. Seemed to work ok after that.

I wish I did not have to go through all that everytime I cut and paste.

I really grasping at straws - I tried hopefully the same steps here
and it works...

You did not say if this has worked before and it just started
happening... Was anything downloaded or updated that you can remember
between when it worked last and now?

Before somebody else suggests, run a virus scan. Malwarebytes
download is free and popular (it will take a while).

Try highlighting the folder on your desktop by clicking it once, type
CTRL X (cut), double click the My Documents folder to open it, click
someplace empty in the folder and typing CTRL V (paste). That works
for me here also. Assuming you are using right clicks to cut and
paste - try it the other way with keystrokes.

How about if you Copy (CTRL C) and Paste instead of Cut and Paste or
various combinations?

Trust me I am doing Copy and Paste ..just in case

Run Virus Scans almost daily

Laptop is only 3 months old
