I have several folders on my desktop (Utilities, Graphics, etc), and would
like to customize each one using a different image file in each as
wallpaper. It was easily done in Win98, but I can't seem to find a way to do
it in XP. Is there a hidden setting somewhere that I'm missing?

Subdirectories (folders) should have that capability. Right-click one,
then click CUSTOMIZE.

All that seems to do in XP is put a reduced copy of the image on the folder
icon. I'm looking to wallpaper the opened folder. Your method worked in
Win98, but it seems that maybe MS eliminated the ability to do this in XP.

Still works but no UI.

Folders must be read only or system. The GUI will not tell you or allow you
to change this on a folder. Type attrib in help to see how. Setting a custom
icon will also create a desktop.ini and make the folder read only.

Then you need to copy a desktop.ini in the folder. I've attached a sample
one.

David, thank you. I remember the Desktop.ini files in Win98 (I always had
them hidden). Your sample looks a little more complicated than those in 98,
but I'm sure I'll be able to figure it out. Again, thanks.

Everything in there work in 95/NT4 with the IE4 Desktop Update or later.
Desktop, ini can vary in their contents. I included custom font colours and
background as that is a common followup question. Just delete the icon text
lines.
