Customize Windows Explorer

I made a change such that Explorer when double clicked would open on the
C:\ Root Directory instead of the way it opens on My Documents when it
ships. I think it was something adjusted in the registry. I forgot what
it was that I did. I'm still recovering from a major melt down of my
computer. I am installing everything fresh. I find that I'm doing lots
with Explorer. So, I would like it to open on C:\. The way it is now, I
have to do a round about path to C:\. Please, help me get there on
first clicks.

You need to change the properties of the shortcut you want to use.
Right-click it, left-click Properties in the drop-down menu. In the
"Shortcut" tab, change Target to read

explorer /e, c:

OK out and give it a try.

For more details, see one of the many articles about this all over the web,
eg http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307856

One handy thing is to customize your toolbar to show the "Folders" button,
and moving that up (making it move to the left - first button on lower
menu bar is nice)
That allow showing the folders in the left pane easily

but if you want that as the default way Windows Explorer opens, you can
change that.
Go to (on Explorer Menu) TOOLS -> FOLDER OPTIONS
Look on the FILE TYPES tab and look down the list to find "Folder".
Do not stop at "File Folder' - look a couple more down to "Folder"
Click on the "Advanced" button-bar.
There you have a box titled "Edit File Type"
There should be two things listed, at least.
One is 'explore' and the oter is "open"
If you select "explore" and then click on the button "Set Default" (which
means that the default action when double-clicking will be for Explorer to
open in a two-paned window) You can switch back the global action to
single pane by choosing "open" and clicking "Set Default"
On MY computer, the action "explore" was in bold letters ... which
normally means it is the default action, but Windows Explorer opened only
a single window.
Once i clicked "Set Default", it worked :)
