Customize user GAL properties?

On the general tab of a user's properties (displayed in the GAL) there are
several fields (First Name, Last Name, City, Dept., and so on.) Is there a
way to take an unused field, like "Office" or "Assistant" for instance, and
change it to something relevant to our company? We'd like to have an
employees cell phone number displayed on the general tab instead of on the
Phone/Notes tab.

We're 90% Outlook 2k3 right now, but i expect sometime by the end of 07 into
08 we should be making the transition to Outlook 2k7.

Thanks in advance!

Those properties are being retrieved from AD U&C so your user admin can
specify those fields.

I'm not sure that answers my question. In Outlook, open a mailbox listed in
the GAL (i.e. look at the properties of the mailbox.) There are 16 fields
listed on the General tab; First, Initials, Last, Display, Alias, Address,
City, State, Zip code, Country/Region, Title, Company, Department, Office,
Assistant, and Phone....

What i'd like to do is change the label "Office" (for example) to something
else, in this case "Cell Phone Number". In other words, the General tab
would no longer include Office, but rather Cell Phone Number instead.

So i guess my question is, are the fields listed under the General tab hard
coded, or can they be changed or manipulated?

Thanks again..

The GAL is generated by Exchange. Outlook can only display the information
provided by Exchange. There is no option in Outlook itself to modify the
info displayed. You might want to ask in an Exchange newsgroup instead.

I was referring to the *label* of the field. Those labels would be there
even if Outlook was being used for POP3 with no Exchange server.

In previous versions (pre2000) it was very easy to change around the Address
Book property pages, but, like Roady said, asking in an Exchange newsgroup
will give you a quicker answer. I haven't tried it in any modern Exchange
versions.
http://mostlyexchange.blogspot.com/2005/03/adding-attributes-to-exchange-details.html
is a good start too, or just google 'exchange details template modifying'.

Read my previous post. I'm just talking about field labels now. Forget i
ever mentioned Exchange..

You mentioned "mailbox" but you mean user properties of users in the GAL,
right? The GAL is Exchange and not Outlook. Which property fields are being
displayed is up to the Exchange GAL (configuration) and not Outlook.

Um, no they wouldn't. What is displayed for a GAL entry and for a Contact
entry are different.

Wait. *ARE* you using Exchange? If yes, it should be very easy to do FROM
THE SERVER as it was in previous versions and it doesn't require you to do
the change on every workstation.

If you are NOT using Exchange, where are you getting a GAL from? But, if
you ARE using Exchange, did you look at the link I pointed you to? It
applies to field labels. Not just data.

Well, dangit, the link would if I had copy/pasted correctly.
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb232094.aspx is a bit better.

Hi Jim
This isn't done through Outlook but in ADUC. Your systems admin should be
able to set the information that goes into those fields.

We are assuming that you are connecting to an Exchange server, is that
correct? If this is so, the question you're asking is Exchange-related and
not Outlook-based.
You should post this in the Exchange newsgroup and include your version of
Exchange and server O/S. The GAL is part of Exchange and all the contents
(name, alias, etc.) are part of what's entered into ADUC when a user's
profile and mailbox are created. Does that make sense?
