Custom Views not keeping the settings

Have about 1000 subfolders. Custom view changes on the one of the subfolders.
Outlook 2003 does not shut down complete. Can the views not be saved due to
the fact that Outlook does not close properly? Is there any issue with 1000
subfolders?

I saw that but it does not state custom views will not be saved. I need
something to say that otherwise it won't be believed. Also, were are the
custom views saved?

I noticed if the Message view is modified it applies to all folders but if
you create a new view for all folders it does not apply to all folders. Is
that how it works by design that you would have to go into the 1000 folders
and manually change to the new view?

Custom views do get saved for me. I've made several of my own. I tend to
leave the default views alone. I'm not sure where views are saved, but I
think it is in a hidden folder in the data store (PST). I'm sure another
MVP knows the definitive answer.

If a folder is using a particular view and you modify the view, all folders
using that view will change. Since the default view for mail folders is the
"Messages" view, then changing that view will affect all folders using it.
Modify the "Current View", however, and you'll change only the one folder.
This is by design. You can reset all mail folders to the default view by
starting Outlook with the /cleanviews command switch and then modifying the
default view.

Here is the issue. /cleanviews was run and the Message view was changed to
accomodate the user requirements for the 1000+ folders that all have to have
the same view. User later installed iTunes addin which made Outlook not
shutdown completely and Autocomplete stopped working because it can't wite to
the .NK2 file. So, my thinking is the custom views are not saving properly
due to outlook not having the option to shutdown.

The user also has an old deleted item and old sent item folder under the
Inbox that has the correct view starting with From first in the column
heading. When the user moved a mssage into the old sent item folder, the view
for all 1000+ folders changed to having To first in the column heading. This
is what needs to be fixed that the view for all folders has to not change.
Creating a new view and applying it to 1000+ folders is not going to be fun.

That very well could be the problem. There are many settings in Outlook
that don't get written unless Outlook shuts down properly.

I can't think of what would cause this. Moving a message to a folder won't
change a folder's view.

Could this be the problem? When the view is not right the user used the Field
chooser to manually switched From for TO.

Also, what is the proper way to shutdown Outlook? Is it the red X, File|
Exit or just leave it running and let the OS shut it down?

Thanks

That would change the current view for the specific folder and not alter the
default view.

My practice is to always close Outlook before closing Windows or logging
off. EIther the Close button in the upper right or File>Exit is fine.
There are times File>Exit is preferable (when you want Outlook to open
multiple windows at startup).

Is there a reason why the folder from the current view to another view
without doing anything?

If you make changes to the Message view then apply the view to the 1000+
folders - how long does it take to propagate those changes and is there a way
to verify it propgated to all those folders? I know the client probably did
not check all 1000+ folders for the correct view.

Is the outlook shutdown documented on the MSFT site?

Thanks
