custom toolbar disappears

I create a custom toolbar in Word. Then when I close and reopen the
application, the toolbar is gone. It is not in the Toolbar list and I have to
create the whole thing all over again. It doesn't already exist because name
it the same thing each time and I don't get the error message that the
toolbar already exists.

Any suggestions?

Is Adobe Acrobat 7.0 installed on the computer? If yes, then the
Acrobat 7.0 Create Adobe PDF toolbar add-in for Word prevents
Word from automatically saving changes to the normal.dot template
(which is where toolbar customizations are stored). See

solutions to the problem.
