Custom desktop icons won't stick

J

John Smith

I've changed the desktop icons to custom icons. However, after a day
or two, the icons change back to the original XP icons.

I've deleted and rebuilt the iconcache.db file, and rebuilt the
Iconcache, but still no luck. After a couple of days, the 'old' icons
are back.

Anyone know why this might be happening and why?

Thank you!

Try using the inbuilt video driver for your card.

This is some bug in XP that has caused this the info for the icons is
deleted out of the registry on reboot for some reason there has been a fair
amount of talk on this subject in the stardock news groups news.stardock.com
under iconpackager posts
some have put it down to power down features, scheduled tasks, windows
update patches but going by all that I have read no one is 100% sure why it
happens
you could also try out iconpackager from stardock and be able to change more
then just those 6 icons on your desktop www.stardock.com

It doesn't happen to everyone's setup some people get lucky and don't have a
problem and when you say all updates do you mean all critical or all as
recommend swell and other stuff from the actual update site? as I have
noticed with a lot of people I know they say they have "all updates" but
when you go to the update site they don't really they only have the ones the
update program downloaded

I wonder if it has to do with DirectX 9b, or whatever is the
latest....

What's weird is that it just started. I used to be able to customize
these icons and they stick. I wonder if it's not a patch or something
that broke it.

It's just the Nvidia Driver Helper service or whatever it is called.
Disable that and your icons won't change back to the defaults.

J

John Smith

What if you don't have a Nvidia graphics card?

Not really sure, John. BTW, I have a Nvidia card and have never had this
problem. I am still researching the issue. Good luck!

No, I don't think it has anything to do with the them I'm using. I've
modified it to use the icons I want, but it still defaults to the
original XP.

Someone else solved this
Run "services.msc"
DISABLE nvidia display driver service
reboot
change yer icons all you want
problem solved!!!

And a huge Thank You to whomever originally posted this solution!

Craig

That was me....lol. It's the "Nvidia Display Driver Helper" or the "Nvidia
Display Driver Service" that was causing the problems on my PC.

I think the name depends on what version of the driver you are running.

Since I set that service to manual (2 weeks now) I have not had any problems
with the icons changing back.

Hope that helps you too.

Yeah, what happens when you are using an ATI graphics card? :p

Craig, you originally referenced a MS error reporting connection? Might he
have error reporting on. Personally, I think this is somehow related to
DirectX 9.0b. But the Nvidia thing worked for me.
John, does ATI have any extra services running?

J

John Smith

Yes, ATI has extra services running, but I've disabled them.
