custom categories lost transferring .pst from OL2k to OL2003

i bought a laptop running XP and OL 2003. copied and pasted the .pst file
from my desktop which runs OL 2k IMO on Win 2k. Then file: open outlook
data file (or wait - i don't even think we had to do that because we renamed
the default .pst file to something else and pasted the OL2k's .pst in the
same folder, so when we launched OL 2003 it automatically opened the newly
pasted .pst file. )
There are some glitches (like the personal folders file and each sub
folder: calendar, contacts, delted items, drafts, inbox, etc... is listed
twice). And the address book shows two "contacts" folders, but i think
almost everything i need is there except, my custom categories. by that i
mean the categories i manually added to the master category list over the
years. if i open an event created on my OL2k/Win2k machine, the categories
i created and assigned to it are listed. when you click on the
Categories... button, you get
Item(s) belong to these categories:

Available categories:
<and here all the default categories are listed, along with a checked box
next to any i created followed by: (not in Master Catregory List).

Anyone know how I can get all the categories I've created to show as an
option? this happened with my last laptop too, and I think I had to
re-enter each category into the master list.

do they reside in a special file like signatures do, outside of the .pst?

thanks!!

categories are stored in the registry.

BTW - you'll probably be better off to make a new profile using the old
folders as the default pst before opening outlook

WOW! Finally! I've learned the method for this. Great. I did it and it
fixed the duplicate personal folders, and the extra listings in the address
book. However, the custom categories are still missing...

any advice?

thanks,

You'll need to export them from the other machine or just live with it. To
add them without typing, try grouping by category and open one item in each
custom category, select, copy and cut all of the categories from the
Category field then click Categories button. Paste in the Items belong to
field and Add to list.
