custom animation problems

I am using PowerPoint 2003 and Windows XP. Whenever I use a custom animation
other than a simple "appear" the screen shows hangs up. The only way that I
can get out of the screen show is to go to Task Manager and close PowerPoint.
I have tried "detect and repair", but it did not help. Suggestions?

Thanks for the suggestion, however it did not work. I am using a Dell
Latitude D600 laptop. with 768meg of RAM. I tried no acceleration and
everthing from zero to full. Acceleration was not selected in PPT. I
updated everything I could find: Bios, video driver, Office SP2, without
success. Now what?

Well, updating video drivers would have been my next suggestion.

This really does act like a display issue, though. Try booting into Windows
Safe Mode and see if the show will play there with your animations. If so, it
points to a video driver problem, and you'd want to call Dell about it since
the latest drivers don't resolve the problem.

You might also go to Start|Run and type msconfig and turn off anything
that's running in the background. If there's something conflicting, that may
resolve it.

What version of PPT? If 2003 and you not have SP1 (or SP2) installed, do so
immediately. Service Pack 1 (which includes the initial critical updates)
solves many of the initial problems - which can include mysterious crashes.

Any of the newer animations do not work, such as exit>contract and
entrance>spiral in. A simple entrance>appear works. When it hangs, CPU
usage goes to 100%.

thanks,

If it is only the new animations that cause the problems, I wonder if your
version of PPT thinks it has the new features disabled.
Check something for me: Go to Tools--> Options--> tab, and see if the
bottom three boxes are checked. If they are, uncheck them, close PPT, and
then re-open and see if the problem gets better.

Kathy, I tried that several times. The disable new features boxes are not
checked. I also tried saving files in the older 95 to 2003 format. Nothing
works!
