Cursor hourglassing every 10 sec

The cursor is 'hourglassing' every 10 seconds for a fraction of a second.

Is this an indication of a virus or other malware ?

It does it with no application running, firewall on. .

Very well could be. Update your definitions and scan from 'Safe Mode'.
Another thing to try is Control_Alt_Delete to bring up the Task Manager and
see which process is increasing memory usage during the behavior and see if
ending the process fixes the problem. You might need a third-party process
viewer if the malware is wriiten to hide from the Task Manager. You can also
use HijackThis to do a scan and save the log file in Notepad. Goto
www.hijackthis.de, paste the log file in the box and hit Analyze to see if
you have any bad guys loaded and running.
