Blinking hourglass

Shortly after installing virus protection (AVG and Spybot) I started getting
a constantly blinking hourglass to the right of my cursor. This does not
happen
whenever my cursor or pointer becomes a pointing finger. My system runs
fine, but the hourglass constantly blinks once a second.

you have some program or process running in the background.
I shall suggest you to scan your system with latest virus definitioned
antivirus as well as with latest versions of
Adaware-SE/Spybot/CWShredder.Run them in safe mode.
