Cursor frequently jumping to top of screen

When I am typing text in a Word 2000 document, after typing one or two sentences I get the bell sound and I can't type any more text. I find that the cursor has jumped to the top of the screen. I move the cursor back into the text block and I can continue typing for one or two sentences when it happens again. I also have this problem when typing text in email messages, but it doesn't happen as frequently. This problem just started about one month ago.

The cursor moves 1/60th of the distance to the top of the screen.
