Current Update to Defender

MS is currently dnloading an update to Defender. I've clicked on the gold
shield at least 15 times over the last 45 minutes and it appears that it's
the same dnload. I need someone to advise me on what's going on. Why is the
"gold" shield reappering every few seconds ?

I agree with plun's suggestion to try a manual install via Windows Update.
Let us know what works.

Sorry it took so long to reply, but last night I got so upset with the
constant re-appearing of the gold shield that I just turned off the computer
and went to bed. I DID a manual dnload and while I was in the MS update area
I counted 15 dnloads in a matter of 30 minutes. I went to the defender help
and this is what is showing for versions.

Windows Defender Version = 1.1.1051.0
Engine Version = 1.1.1185.0
Signature Version = 1.13.1276.3

Can anyone tell me if these versions are correct? Also, I just noticed that
I have the shield back.

Yes I can go to update. I just read the KB article. Do you recommend that I
remove the current signature file as the KB article states under
"resolution", then do another update???

Thanks for the assistance.

Yes do that !

Yes--follow those steps--the current update is not fully in place--so
removing it, and then replacing it may get the job done right.

It works. I did as the KB article stated under the Resolution paragraph
instructed.
I deleted the signature, then went to the Help Option, About and checked for
updates and the version 16 installed the the gold shiled went away.

I really appreciate your assistance. Your great.

Just wanted to let you know that this technique is NOT working at all here. I
have the same symptoms, have tried removing the signature. (The attempt fails
with a popup that says that the installation source cannot be found.) I have
also uninstalled Windows Defender, and I have removed it and its updates by
using the Installer Cleanup utility. All on separate occasions, followed by
an attempt at another clean installation of Windows Defender, only to suffer
the same fate again. I finally went ballistic on it and wiped out everything
I could, including the admin user profile I was using. I created another
admin user profile and reinstalled the software. Same result.

This is happening on a single system out of four. (Windows Defender works
just fine on the other three computers.) Funny thing is that this computer is
far and away the most standard image.

With Microsoft Update the update appears to happen, and then the shield and
the Windows Defender icons show up in the system tray immediately again. I
also see messages in Event Viewer that keep telling me that the update will
be installed at 02:00 the next date. I've left the computer turned on and
logged on for three days, and it keeps incrementing the date on which it says
the update is to be installed. It's really, really frustrating.

I haven't had anything like this kind of problem--on about 4 dozen or so
machines on 4 different networks.

Am I correct that this is not a managed network with SUS or WSUS servers
controlling updating?

Correct, Bill. This is on a home network behind a Linksys router. All of my
test systems at work (I run the networks there.) are working just fine with
WSUS and WD.

I have resolved the issue, however. Although the use of the MSKB solution
referenced many times here did not work, and my initial use of the Installer
Cleanup Utility did not work, I tried removing ONLY the Windows Defender
update signatures on that machine using the cleanup utility this afternoon.
(Previously, I had tried removing WD and the signatures, but not the
signatures alone.) I then clicked on the autoupdate shield, and the
installation reported failure! But a few seconds later, as I was gritting my
teeth and getting ready to uninstall WD from the problem computer entirely, a
pop-up in the system tray announced that Windows Defender was completely
up-to-date! I checked, and, sure enough, there sat 1.13.1276.16.

I want to thank you for your assiduous attention to detail in this, and
other, matters. I had communicated with you about this machine briefly in a
couple of other threads but had simply been overwhelmed with too much other
stuff to be able to follow up in a proper manner. Your efforts here are much
appreciated.

Thanks! I'm carrying on far more threads than I can keep proper track
of--and still trying to get a handle on the correct answers in a number of
cases--but folks are getting good help here, and I'm glad to be part of
that.

Yes, this particular machine was a mystery. The primary user account (an
admin account) had been changed to a Limited User account for a while as we
tried to see how practical it would be for a machine in its role to function
under the LUA best practices philosophy. (It wasn't, and partially because of
Microsoft software!)

Not only did attempts to fix Windows Defender result in messages about
inability of the system to locate "installation sources", this also happened
with Microsoft Office. (It was impossible, as a matter of fact, to uninstall
or perform a repair on Miclrosoft Office!) Restoration of the user account to
admin status did not help, and neither did manual restoration of the default
ACLs for all of the components of the profile. Removal of the profile and
replacement with another account and profile did fix the Office problem but
didn't help with Windows Defender. I was really wondering what the heck was
going on.

I'm glad I decided to give a shot at using the Installer Cleanup Utility for
removing just the update signatures. It's not really a solution I would be
eager to try, but I'm not going to argue (for now) with something that works.
I'm just glad not to be reinstalling the OS on this computer. I've got enough
to do. (We are moving this weekend.)

Thanks again for your help. My regards to you.

Sorry, I replied to the wrong message earlier on, Bill. Old, tired, and
preoccupied. Anyway, thanks again.

I have this perpetual non updating shield problem on a stand alone PC.
I used the kb to delete signatures OK but my current signature is now
1.13.1282.6.
Others have 16 instead of 6 with a differnt 1282 value?

As my message stated, I have already run the kb. I went from signature 3 to 6
but not to 16.
I tried a manual install previously. A successful updated message was given
but nothing was updated, then a few seconds later a further update shield
appeared in my notification tray.

When I now try manual update it states everything is up to date.

One more slightly bizarre note on this updating issue. Though I have the one
recalcitrant system updating now, there is an odd new wrinkle to updating on
ALL of the systems, including the three that were behaving themselves
previously. Now, when I see the System Tray indications that Windows Defender
wants an update, if I click on the Security Center shield icon and confirm
that I want to install the Windows Defender signature update that has become
available, I am told (at the end of the installation process) that the update
FAILED. A few seconds later Windows Defender cheerily informs me that it is
completely up-to-date. I check the Help / About dialog in WD, and, sure
enough, it reports the updated signature. This occurred on the .16 to .3
update, and then again on the .3 to .6 update.

I am choosing Custom install (not Express) because I always prefer to read a
little about what is getting installed before it gets installed. Don't know
if this would occur with the Express choice or not. Odd, eh?
