Curious Underline

In a document I prepared, I noticed that underneath certain words there
appears a very faint dotted underline. It seems to be beneath some (but not
all) names of individuals (first and last name. The menu bar Format | Font
doesn't show any evidence of underlines. What's causing it?

Little red squigley underline indicates a word that has
been determined to be mis-spelled. A little green squigley
underline, indicates possible grammatical problems.

It shows that the name has been recognized by a "Smart Tag". When the
mouse hovers over the name, you should see an icon of the letter i in
a circle. Click that icon for a menu of actions, such as adding the
name to your contacts list.

You're correct about "smart tags". When I uncheck the "smart tags" box in
Tools | Options | View, the underlines disappear. But hovering either the
mouse, the insertion point or both over the name doesn't bring up the icon
you mentioned. Is there another checkbox somewhere else?

Yes, there's another checkbox. Stupidly, it isn't in the Tools > Options
dialog where you'd expect. Instead, go to Tools > AutoCorrect Options >
Smart Tag. The checkbox is at the bottom, "Show Smart Tag Actions buttons".
There's also one at the top, "Label text with smart tags", that can turn on
and off the whole Smart Tag system. There's yet another in Tools > Options >
Save to enable/disable saving smart tags in the document's file.

All of this can be found in the help topic "Change smart tag options", but
only if you know to look for that term. :-(
