ctrl panel..folder options "always use the selected program"... I
uncheck it, and it checks it again!

I was in itnernet explorer, clicked an .asx file (streaming audio), it
asked me what program to use.. I clicked either yes or no, but I
should've picked the other one 'cos now it always uses the progarm I
chose.

So now trying to reverse that.

I go to ctrl panel..folder options... I click "asx", click change, and
I see it's got that program chosen, and "always use the selected
program" is checked. I uncheck it, click ok. And click change again,
and I see it's checked again!! I can choose a different program e.g.
windows media player, and click ok.. And that works, always opening
windows media player without asking me, when I click the asx file. But
I want it to ask me what program to use. And each time I uncheck that
"always use the selected program" box in ctrl panel..folder
options..[file extension e.g. asx].change , and click ok it has it
checked again when I go back into it!

I just want to uncheck it. I want IE to ask me what program to use
before opening the file.

See if whatever program is trying to open the file has any file type settings you can clear/disable.

Also, in the File Types dialog, click the 'Advanced' button & make sure that 'Confirm open after
download' is checked.

Good Luck,

Microsoft MVP [Windows XP Shell/User]

it seems to work now - asking me beforehand.. I guess I clicked
Advanced and "confirm open..".

But what I don't understand, is that when I go to
ctrl panel..folder options..file types..asx

I see 2 relevant buttons "Change" "Restore". I don't see an
"advanced" button.

I have a few programs for asz file. media player and VLC/Video LAN, are
2 of them.

I notice that when I associate asx with Windows Media Player I have the
buttons "Change" and "Restore".
When I associate it with "VLC Media player"(aka Video LAN) , I get
"Change" and "Advanced". (The "restore" button changes to an
"advanced" button)

only when the advanced button is there can I choose "confirm open". So,
I can't get windows media player as the default , with that prompt that
asks before opening it. Associating it with "media player classic" is
also, only offering "Change" and "Restore".

no big deal, but strange..

thanks

Click the 'Restore' button, then use the 'Advanced' button to edit the 'open' action -- change it to
Media Player. Then you can set 'Confirm open' as well.

trying it now (having recently started my comp up), it swiched round
such that media player had the advanced option and clicking restore
went to VLC with restore/change buttons. But now I played with it and
it's back to VLC with the advanced option, as before. I don't even
think I restarted in between.

If I do as you write.. Having it set to media player(has restore and
change buttons for media player), I click restore, (now it'll switch
to VLC), I can click advanced , but that will only apply to VLC, I
think.

Have you configured VLC so it DOESN'T think it's the default for ASX files? Verify that first.

Once you have access to the Advanced button, click it!!! While it says it applies to VLC now, you
are going to edit the individual actions -- Open & Play -- to use Media Player.
