ctrl-alt-del Task Manager

Hi guys,
Its very rare that I need to use Task Manager but the other day I need to
access it and did the normal Ctrl-Alt-Del thing and received the following:
"Taskmgr.exe Application Error. The Application failed to initialize
properly(0xc000142). Click OK to terminate the application. (Along with the
typical...) OK"
No problem accessing it via "RUN" or through C:/Windows/System32. My AV is
always updated, but still ran an outside check anyway-no problems. Running XP
pro/SP2( ran Task Manager vis Ctrl-Alt-Del several times after SP2 with no
problems). Thanks for your help in advance-and have a Merry Christmas-Happy
Holidays.

could be a virus is your AV software up to date? Boot in safe mode and see
if it works OK if so run a full system scan while in safe mode

Wayne,thanks for the quick reply.

Per your suggestion I rebooted in the safe mode and Ctrl-Alt-Del did bring
up Task Manager!! Also reran my AV(Norton - Definitions dated 12/15/04) -
nothing was found. I assume that tells us something is still a miss!

Wayne,
I always run both Ad-aware and Spy-Bot on a weekly bases along with Spyware
Blaster all with weekly updates, but I reran them again under safe mode as
was suggested.Noting was found! My weelky AV program is set up to always
scan all directories and files along with all compressed files.
Back to square one.

I have tried all the varous hints suggested and still NG.

I don't know if this makes a differance or not but right after the
Application dialog box opens up the "hourglass" appears for about 1-2
seconds. Like ithe program is trying to run.

Under the User Config/Admin Temp/Sys/Crtl+Alt+Del Options the orginal option
was "Not Confiured" I changed it to "enable" but no message popped up as the
box indicated.
Alerter Services CAD was set as "Automatic" and it was "Started"
Changing any of the settings has made no differance.

Only the second method to launch Task Manager works. Neither CAD or CSE
will work and the only thing they do is bring up the Application Error dialog
box. Is this a condition where I would need to reinstall XP, the various
gazillion updates and SP2?? AGH :(
