Ctrl-Alt-Del function changed

M

MS

Windows XP Pro, SP1.

Formerly, when I pressed Ctrl-Alt-Del, that would immediately bring up the
Task Manager.

Now, it brings up a different screen, with several choices ("Lock Computer",
etc.), one of which is Task Manager. I don't know what caused the change.

I would prefer to go directly to the Task Manager on Ctrl-Alt-Del, as
occurred previously, without needing that extra click of choosing it.

How do I get that back, so that pressing Ctrl-Alt-Del goes right to Task
Manager?

Ctrl + Alt + Delete opens the Windows Security window if the Welcome screen
is turned off.

Turn on the Welcome screen...
1. In Control Panel, click User Accounts.
2. Click Change the way users log on or off.
3. Click to select the Use the welcome screen for fast and easy logon check
box.
4. Click OK.

Disadvantages of having the Welcome Screen turned off.

Ctrl + Alt + Delete opens the Windows Security window if the Welcome screen
is turned off instead of opening the Task Manager.

The Welcome screen must be turned on to see the Users tab in Task Manager.
(Fast User Switching must also be turned on.)

Fast User Switching is available only when the Welcome screen is turned on.

Disabling the Welcome Screen removes the user picture from the XP Start
Menu. The Welcome Screen and the Start Menu use the same picture.

The only disadvantage that I see to having the Welcome Screen turned on is
that you get a lot of Failure Audits; Event ID 529 & 680.

Failure Events Are Logged When the Welcome Screen Is Enabled

To start Task Manager:

Ctrl + Alt + Delete
or
Ctrl + Shift + Esc
or
Right click the Taskbar | Task Manager
or
Start | Run | Type: taskmgr | Click OK
or
Create a Desktop Shortcut to taskmgr.exe

Hope this helps. Let us know.

Go to Control Panel and double click on User Accounts.
In User Accounts, click on "Change the way users log on or
off".
On the next page, put a check mark in the box next to "Use and
Welcome Screen". If you want you can put a check mark next to
"Use Fast User Switching".
Hit the "Apply Options" button.
Hit Ctrl + Alt + Del and see if Task Manager runs.

Keep in mind that enabling the Welcome Screen will change the
interface you see when your computer starts and turns off. If
you prefer using the "Logon to Windows" box, you're going to
have to live with selecting Task Manager from the Windows
Security box that you're currently seeing when you hit Ctrl +
Alt + Del.

Good luck

The menu your Ctrl Alt Del brings up should clue you to
what program changed your registry.

Examine the menu to see what new programs are on it that you
"just installed", or that installed without you necessarily
being aware of it.

Uninstall the program/s, run a good registry cleaner ( "Crap
Cleaner" is one), and you SHOULD be back to where you were.

Also don't forget the Windows Restore function (under
Accessories, under the Start button)

And don't forget, when your system IS working as you want it
to, and you have just successfully installed something new--
or better yet BEFORE you install something new,

create/label a Restore point.

Don't just allow your computer to set them randomly.

I am the only person using the computer. I don't want the "Welcome" screen,
but rather to boot directly into Windows.

I know that is possible, while still having Ctrl-Alt-Del go directly to Task
Manager, as my computer functioned that way before.

So, does anyone know--how can I get Ctrl-Alt-Del to go directly to Task
Manager again, without enabling the "Welcome" screen?

You can have the Welcome Screen enabled and still logon
automatically. If you find that after enabling the Welcome
Screen you're not being logged on automatically, do the
following:

Go to Start -> Run.
Copy and paste the following into the Open box:

control userpasswords2

Click OK.
In the "Users of this computer" box, click on the User you want
to have logged on automatically.
Uncheck "Users must enter a user name and password to use this
computer".
Click OK.
In the box that pops up, make sure the account you clicked on
earlier is entered next to User Name.
Enter your password twice.
Note: You can leave the password box blank if the account does
not have a password.
Click OK.
Reboot to see if you get the desired results.

Good luck

If you would rather not use the Welcome screen, use Ctrl+Shift+Esc to bring
up the task manager.

The hotkey combo CTRL+SHIFT+ESC brings up the task manager no matter what
other settings you have applied.
