CTLTASK.EXE hangs up

I had to reinstall WindowsXP a few days ago, and
reinstalled all my drivers and software. Starting
yesterday, when I log on, the PC seems to hang when
loading McAfee 6.0, even after the VShield icon loads to
the taskbar. Task Manager showed CTLTASK.exe still
running, so I end-tasked out since my normal programs had
all loaded. I thought the problem was with McAfee, the
last program that loads, so I uninstalled it and rebooted
to reinstall. However, the PC still hung up without
McAfee installed. So it looks like the problem is with
the CTLTASK file, but what do I do about it?
