Looking very pretty. Hope the gameplay lives up to the graphical promise.

Not holding my breath TBH ... so far it all seems to be about how great
the graphics and physics are. Well the graphics on FarCry were great but
after a while they levels just got more and more uninteresting. I
probably still buy it but don't see it being that type of game that I
think cool that's new and a step forward for FPSes.

I think I'd load it up go WOW! and wonder around pushing branches back
and shooting trees down for an hour (probably have a swim too). After
that I'd get used to it and want a good game...

Far Cry was a peculiar game. Started off great, still pretty
interesting in the middle. Who knows what happened to the last third.

I enjoyed it in the main, but it was like playing two different games
based on the same graphics engine.

I didn't even finish it. I got to the level where mutants were roaming
around on an Island, you could see them a mile off and shoot them with
a mounted gun, some shot rockets back, some just stood until they
died.

I think I was almost at the end but I just couldn't believe how much
the game had deteriorated and didn't bother finishing it.

Crysis looks pretty interesting. I'll but it for sure.

Do you remember Red Faction and its "destructible environment"? I
remember doing the "wow" thing over that to start with. It rapidly
wore off though.

I was one of the minority that enjoyed that game. I was really
disappointed with RF2 though. I played it through to the end, but it
was quite a let down. Not a bad game, but not brilliant either.

Remember reading about it but was put off buying it by a lot of NG posts
slating it.

I've mentioned before that I did buy Devastation. What I probably
haven't mentioned is that I bought it because I'd read that there was
rag-doll deaths and I could kick cans, move chairs and crates to make
traps etc etc - yup, it had that new-fangled physics. I overlooked the
bugs for a short while as I walked around moving everything that could
be moved. The physics were actually quite poor but it was all brand new
then and I did get the WOW factor for around 1/2hr.... then the rest of
the game kicked in ;-)

I think I got to about 3-4 levels before the end but by then it had
become to hard to be enjoyable and also to samey to make me want to put
the effort in. Strangely enough I think they made the game to big in
terms of levels (20 IIRC) as it's difficult to sustain the interest over
such a long period. When you compare it to HL2 you can really see the
difference in that HL2 has a real variety in its level design and game
play for different levels.

Still a good game but just failed to make a classic game ...

For me it's a simple case of mathmatics...

I never bothered to finish Far Cry but I've played through HL2 roughly
8 times.

I'm playing HL2 for the fourth time now and every time it never fails to
amaze me the little extras they've put into the game to make it so much
better. Just think of the graffiti that you see scattered about the
place and the effort that has gone into making the world feel like a
real world and not just a series of repetitive environments.

That's a good point.

I haven't played *any* games as many times as I've played all of the
Half-Life games and the mission packs and episodes.

The Half-Life universe created by Valve definitely has something that
other games haven't got.

I have to say that the quality and production values in all of those
games are completely unmatched.

In many ways Half-life 2 reminds me of Metal Gear Solid games,
including the ultra-linear gameplay and shallowness. There is no
questioning though that a lot of money was burned making both of those
games (series).

Now I'm just the reverse. I played through HL2 to the finish wayyyyyy
quicker than I ever played through HL1, and I never went back to HL2 after
finishing it. I've played certain levels in Far Cry numerous times, but
never finished the game because I can just never get anywhere on the last
"Volcano" level.

Odd, isn't it.

Just goes to show we all have different tastes I guess.

I don't totally dislike Far Cry mind you, I thought the demo showed
promise and some of the outdoor levels were actually quite good fun.

I will just never think of it as being a classic in the same way I
would of HL2.

I personally found far cry vastly more enjoyable than HL2

I finished and loved Far Cry, and am now playing it again even though I
have other games I haven't finished - including HL2:Chapter 1. I
finished HL2 but was disappointed, and certainly wouldn't go back and
play it again.
