Hi, and thanks in advance for any and all help on this issue.
i can't get to the windows update, the checker pops up, i ok the install,
and it stops after unzipping and trying to verify the file
so i manually downloaded sp1, but when i try to install it, it unzips to
the temp folder ok, but then it displays an error "can't verify file
integrity"
same thing when i try to install the ie6.01 update.
i also cannot log into msn.
both the cryptographic service and the rpc service are running.
this is driving me crazy.
all help is appreciated.

Rename the folder windows\system32\catroot2 and reboot. That will
generate a new, clean folder, and you can then delete the renamed one.

Then get - only - Q817287 and install it, which should now be OK. It
is the cure for the problem: you should then be able to carry on with
other updates, and the problem will not recur
