Cryptographic service

C

Carl

I was trying to download the Windows XP service pack 1
and it failed with the following message:

"Setup could not verify the integrity of Update.inf.
Make sure the Cryptographic service is running on this
computer."

I ran a search for Update.inf as well as Cryptographic
service on my computer and found nothing. I searched MS
without finding a download on this point. Any ideas?
Thanks.

Hi Carl,

Open Windows Explorer to C:\Windows\system32, right-click/rename the
catroot2 folder to catold. Then retry the SP1 installation. When finished,
there will be a new catroot2 folder and you can safely delete the old
renamed one.

I don't understand your answer to OP's query.

Doesn't the message he got imply he should run services.msc and make sure
cryptography services is set to automatic? IOW, make sure it is not
disabled?

Hi David,

The error message is misleading. This is a known issue with installing SP1,
and the problem is actually the catroot2 folder. Renaming it will resolve
the issue.

David,

Yes. That's one of the things to check. However, it has been noted that renaming the Catroot2 solves it. In many, many cases we've seen the Cryptographic Services is already on and the user gets this error.

Additionally, see www.dougknox.com, Win XP Fixes, Windows Update - Cryptographic Service Error. This small VB Script file was developed to correct the common problems that cause this error.
