Crossword

How can I set up a simple crossword in Word 2003. My son has CP and I want
him to be able to complete his homework using his computer, and without me
having to write down his answers for him.

I use a table for this. Set the row height to 0.25" and the column width the
same. If you're going to be typing in the squares, you'll probably need to
set the cell margins to 0". Apply grid borders. Black out squares by
applying black shading to the cells; this is easy if you display the Borders
and Tables toolbar.

Thank you Suzanne for your prompt response. The 'simple' part that I refered
to in my message is that the school has produced a series of linked words in
the style of a crossword without putting much thought into it. There are only
sixteen words but the full crossword table would be 23 x 16 squares! I have
been patiently joining text boxes together, but your idea seems rather less
painstaking. Any ideas about putting the numbers in the boxes for the start
of each word?

When I've done this, I've just put the numbers in as ordinary text (Arial)
in a small font size (you could even use Superscript) in the upper left
corner (so you want horizontal alignment to be Left and vertical alignment
Top). For the sort of "crossword" you describe, just omit the borders from
the empty squares instead of coloring them black. I confess I've set up
crosswords only to be printed and filled in by hand (in CRC for a student
workbook), so I haven't had to deal with formatting both the numbers and the
inserted characters.

In each box that begins a word Format the cell as TEXT, type a space, and
then the number of the word. Highlight the number (without highlighting the
space), go back to Format cell, in the Font area, click the superscript
checkbox. Align the text Right. Ignore the error message. This will give
you a little number in the right-hand corner of your box. The only problem
is that the text itself might also end up superscripted (in which case you'd
need to highlight that letter, go back to Format->Font, and uncheck the
superscript box)
