Crossover Cable help please!

I'm trying to "network" 2 computers without a hub using a crossover
cable. My ultimate goal is to be able to share a dial up (yes, DIAL
UP) connection between the 2 and share files and a printer.

I changed the IP Address and Subnet Mask to 192.168.0.1 and
255.255.255.0 on the 1st computer, and 192.168.0.2 on the 2nd computer.
It's saying it's connected, but I can't see the 2nd computer on the
1st or the 1st on the 2nd. I've turned off the firewall on both lan
connections (i use a dial up modem to connect to the internet, so no
fear of not having a firewall on the lan connections) but it still
won't work!

Another question I have is that the Default Gateway is blank,
and so is the Preferred and Alternate DNS Server fields, would that
cause a problem? I'm running WinXP SP2 on both machines.

I enabled file and printer sharing, I have the same workgroup name on
both machines, I have enabled sharing on the C & D drives on both
machines, I just can't seem to get the 2 computers to see each other.

When I try and ping between them it times out, and I can't get them to
see each other in the workgroup computers section.

Any ideas?

The best way for you to get the results you desire would be use of the Network
Setup Wizard. If your hardware, and your firewalls, are properly setup, the NSW
will enable everything to work just fine. I have an article explaining how to
setup networking using a crossover cable.

Note that, depending upon the firewall, turning it off may not be the correct
answer. Also note that you may not be aware of all firewalls in your computer.
