My PC is currently running windows XP home edition and I
would like to corsgrade/upgrade to windows xp profesaional
without havig to reeinstall all SW (Office, CAD, CAM, FEM
tools etc.)
Unfortunaltely, the OS and all programs are currently
installed an partition c:
What are the risks involved in this undertaking?
Can I usa a regular "windows XP professional upgrade" set-
up CD?
What is a safe way to proceed?
Can the "restore system configuration" utility be used?

First be sure you need to upgrade to Pro. If you need advanced networking,
file encryption, advanced file sharing and permissions, remote desktop,
etc... then Pro would be the way to go. The upgrade cd will work fine and
should upgrade you home version to pro without formatting with no probs.
Always backup important stuff first.

Minimal. Installed software will be retained provided there is no
disaster like a power failure at a critical moment. So make a fresh
back up of data, just in case

That is the thing to use - run it from the present system, take Install,
continue with Upgrade
