'Crop Marks' but no Asian Languages Set

Hi All,

I'm using Word 2003 on Windows XP and I've noticed the 'crop marks'
that appear in print layout mode. I would like to remove them. After
searching this newsgroup, the conventional solution seems to be to
remove any Asian language settings. However, under my 'Microsoft
Office 2003 Language Settings' only 'English US' is selected.

As well, the 'Text Boundaries' option under the Tools->Options->View
tab is not selected.

I've updated my machine with the latest office updates and restarted
the machine with no success.

Any other suggestions?

Chris,

Do you have an earlier version of the Office suite instatlled? If so, check
for an East Asian language setting in that version as well.

I am having the same problem. There is no other version of Word installed
and I do not have any other languages installed other than English. Also, I
have turned off the text boundaries option. Still getting the crop marks.
This did not start happening until I upgraded to Word 2003...there seem to be
a lot of little bugs with this new update. Any other suggestions to get the
crop marks off?

There are no other versions of Office installed. The machine is only a
couple months old and the first version installed was Office 2003. The
crop marks started to appear a couple of weeks ago I believe.

Chris,

No sorry I don't. Here is the link to the KB article. I can only
suggest that you try these steps verbatim to see if the issue is
resolved. The only time I have seen that this didn't resolve the
problem was a case where the user had mutliple Office suites installe
on a computer.

Hi Chris,

Check in Tools=>Options to see if you have
either a 'complex script' or 'Asian Typography'
tab exists. If not then you may want
to try (A) starting Word in Office safe mode
(hold ctrl key when starting Word), (b)
using Start=>Find/Search to remove files found
with the search string of
~$*.*;*.tmp
(C) run repair reinstall for MS Office in
Add/Remove Programs in the Windows control
Panel.

Hi Greg,

Thanks for the suggestions. I'll check everything one more time. I
did notice one other interesting thing. There are two user accounts on
the machine. In one of the accounts, the 'crop marks' do not appear,
and in the other account they do. Neither account has any language
settings enabled.

Also, the KB article suggests that you must open a document for the
marks to appear. I'm assuming they also mean empty documents as well?
I do not have to open an existing document to see the marks in Word;
i.e., whenever I open Word, the marks are present, whether it is a new
document or an existing one.

'Asian Typography' tabs. I was not sure what I was supposed to do with
this information.

So, first I did (B) - deleting all temp files. This did not remove the
crop marks.

However, when I booted in safe mode by holding down the ctrl key (A),
the crop marks disappeared! I exited Word and re-entered in normal
mode. The crop marks seemed to have been removed! Additionally, under
Tools->Options, the 'Complex Script' and 'Asian Typography' tabs also
disappeared.

I appreciate all the help everyone.

As a final question for interest sake, where did the 'Complex Script'
and 'Asian Typography' tabs appear from, and how can I avoid them in
the future? Also, why does putting Word into safe mode remove these
tabs?

Hi Chris,

The Asian Typography tabs and
the Complex script tabs as well as some unique
options within existing tabs in File=>Page Setup,
Format=>Font and others come from enabling settings
with the language tool.

I suspect that in some cases the Office install is
querying Windows to see if any language features, possibly
including wheter internet explorer is set up to automatically
enable various languages is 'active' on a PC or in a profile
when Office is installed.

Sometimes though it appears that the registry data just gets
'stuck' or 'blocked' by a 3rd party software add-in. Sometimes
starting Word in safe mode and or deleting the temp files will
give it a 'clean' chance to recheck settings.

Sometimes enabling a Right to Left (complex script) language
or an Asian language with the language tool then disabling
it after starting Word then closing it will also jar things
loose. It may also be impacted differently if Outlook express
or any of the Office apps were running when the language tool
was toyed with
