critical updates & service packs duplicated - HELP !!!

On windows update, I noticed a critical update has been installed four times; three times automatically. Also, a big service pack for my windows XP has been installed five times. I don't know how to remove these; I didn't put them all on. I am a low-tech person with just a personal computer at home. But I don't appreciate Microsoft installing the same thing over and over on my computer. What should I do? Thanks. Lo
