Critical Update Restart

I wonder if someone might be able to help with the following two questions:
#1- Occasionally, when I shutdown my computer (WinXPsp2), while it is
shutting down (before it actually closes), I see a small message box, that
says something to the effect - “A program is closing. If you click Cancel,
you might lose unsaved work/files.†Then a little bar-graph goes quickly from
left to right and then the box disappears and the computer shuts down. At the
top of that little box the file name (I presume a file name) shows as CCAPP.
Would anyone know what this is all about and can it be corrected or should I
worry? (While using that computer I did download two Norton Updates and a MS
Critical Update. The MS Critical Update said it had to restart the computer,
which I allowed it to do. The box did not show during that shutdown and
automatic restart, it was visible only when I did the final shutdown for the
night.)
#2- My second question might be a little easier to answer. When I download a
Critical Update from Microsoft, should I allow MS to automatically shutdown
(disconnect my AOL9 from the web) my computer and restart it? Or should I NOT
click “RESTART NOW,†and MANUALLY disconnect from AOL and then restart the
computer myself?
Thanks for any help.

Hi, Alice.
CCAPP is an important part of your Norton software, and you can just let it
do its job. See this page for a bit more information:
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/nav.nsf/docid/2003010811511306?OpenDocu
ment&src=hot&prod=Norton%20AntiVirus&ver=2003%20for%20Windows%202000/Me/98/X
P&stg=2&base=http://www.symantec.com/techsupp/nav/&next=nav_2003_search_solv
e.html&sone=nav_2003_tasks.html&tpre=
For #2, there is no need to "help" your computer to restart. It knows how to
do the job correctly. If you have Web pages you do not want to close, or
data that needs to be saved, you might want to Restart later. The Update
will begin working after you restart.

Thank you.
#1- I clicked on each of the URLs you supplied, but they took me to pages
no longer in existence. I appears some of the clickable URLs are incomplete
or not highlighted.
#2- The CCAPP program closing-box at shut-down is nothing to worry about then?

"ccapp.exe" belongs to Norton AntiVirus, runs auto-protect and email checking
facilities.

It's true that it should shut down along with the system, but this error
message is not a problem. It just means that the system had to wait a bit
longer for the Norton resident program to clear from RAM.

Not to worry about, especially because you've installed a Norton product.
If you had NOT installed Norton, well then I would be concerned!

The CCAPP refers to a Symantec product. Since the system closes down
quickly, and you are experiencing no other problems I wouldn't worry
about it.

For the second issue I prefer to end all aps myself prior to doing the
restart.

So sorry, Alice, that is one giant link which you can highlight in its
entirety if you wish (without any spaces at beginning or end) and paste into
your browser.
Yes, the box in question is normal. The Symantec site in my giant link
discusses it briefly.
