Dan

I had the conversation below yesterday under the
title, "Windows XP Shut Down"

My problem is that when I try to install the update
recommended to me yesterday, I get an error (please see
below). The responder below said there are bugs in the
last 5 critical updates, but I don't know how to find and
uninstall them. Any comments?

thanks
Dan

The last 5 have bugs? Is that really true? I'm not
savvy with locating/removing these things. How do I find
the latest ones? My add/remove programs list doesn't put
dates on the files there.

thanks,
dan

Without knowing how your OS is configured it will be difficult to help. Do some research on how to set the "end tasks" or "hung applications" time in the registry. A general search on the internet will get you some answers as to where and how to configure these or you can e:mail me and I will send them to you. You should also look at the event viewer in your administrative tools in the control panel and opening either the "system" or "application" logs look for any red Xs that correspond to the time of your problem and then double click on them to open a details window. This will probably all be Greek to you but if you give us the info in that window then we have a more accurate point to look at. I rather doubt that the last five patches were buggy. At least I haven't had any problems but the I have SP2 and the updates are different. Have fun. {:~)

It seems with windows most times you "just can't get
there from here." I logged on as administrator, but
can't get access to the event logger. I tried in safe
mode, too, but it just says I "may" need administrative
level access, but I already do!

thanks,
dan

Please keep the discussion in the original thread. Don't start a new one.

Thanks
Steve
