Critical Download Crashed Computer

I downloaded the new critical updates last night. It kept prompting me to
reboot and I finally did. However, the system would no reboot and kept
providing these errors: "RUNDLL error loading newdev.dll Specified procedure
could not be found". Nothing opens on my desktop except the wallpaper. When
I look at Cntrl-Alt-Del to get Task Manager it shows that there are no
applications running. What do I do?? Thank you to anyone who can help!

Can you boot up in safe mode and then run some spyware programs to see if you
got infected?

Michael,

It just sits there ?

There's a TINY change it's not totally dead. Since the task manager comes
up, it's not totally locked up. You can look at the processes to see if
something's using up the cpu, and what IS running.

When you're on the 'Applications' tab, at the bottem right, there's a
'New Task' button. Click that and see if you can start explorer, just
type in explorer and press return. explorer is the file manager, but it's
also the shell, the UI to Windows. The first time you start it, the shell
starts and this should bring on the desktop. If you can do that, then you
can navigate around and try to find something more out.

Does it start in Safe mode ?

The error message is related to the install of XP SP2. See the MS
site for the fix.
