Creative Audigy 5.1 settings won't work after Windows update

System: Dell XPS 4 with 3.2 GHz, 2 Gb RAM, Windows XP Media Center
Soundcard: Creative SB Audigy 2 ZS (WDM)
Speakers connected Klipsch 5.1.

I ran windows update manager and installed the following HW updates:
Creative audigy audio processor (August 2006)
Creatve Sound creative game port (January 2003)
Driver update for Dell 2407WFP (Analog)

Afterwards, my sound had defaulted back to 2/2.1. When I reset it to
5.1, it wouldn't take and would only play out of front speakers.

I did a system restore and now everything is working. Anyone know
what caused this and which of these updates I should block in future?

Current driver for Audigy is 5.12.4.445 (8/17/2004)

Ever since I got this system, sound settings will occasionally
"restore" to default setting of 2/2.1. Any way to establish different
default?

Thanks.

You shouldn't have used Windows update for your Audigy, go to Creative site
and get the right ones.

Never get hardware driver updates from the Windows update - they are
frequently broken. Always go the manufacturer's site and install those.

Never download hardware updates via Windows Update. Contact the
manufacturer directly.

If you like the automation style of Windows Update, Creative offers a
similar feature. Go here: http://www.creative.com/support/ and click
on "Software AutoUpdate".
